| Case No. 006 · Difficulty: Easy · Species: Cat The CaseThe delivery arrives: a plush, round, very well-reviewed cat bed.You unpack it, fluff it, and place it in the sunniest spot in the house.Your cat walks straight past the bed.It climbs into the cardboard box the bed came in, folds itself into a loaf, and stares at you over the rim.The box is too small. The cat does not care.It sleeps there for three days.Your Theory?Look at the evidence.Any box will do: shoe boxes, laundry baskets, the bathroom sink.Smaller often seems better, even when the cat spills over the sides. It's worse in new places, after a move, or when visitors arrive. And the cat chooses the box over a bed that cost a lot more.Warmth? Hiding? Pure contrariness?Make your call. The RevealYour cat isn't ignoring the bed. It's choosing a hiding place.Cats are hunters, but they are also small enough to be hunted. A space with walls on several sides is a place to watch the world without being seen, and to rest without being surprised. That feeling of safety seems to matter. Researchers at Utrecht University gave some newly arrived shelter cats a hiding box and some none. In the first days, the cats with boxes showed lower stress scores and settled in faster.Snug spaces may help with warmth too. Cats are comfortable at warmer temperatures than most people keep at home, and a tight space holds in body heat. And the urge seems to run deep. In a small citizen-science study, cats were shown squares drawn on the floor, including an optical illusion that only looks like a square. The cats sat in the illusion about as often as in the real outline. If it looks like it fits, the cat sits.Honest note: the stress study is solid but small, and the floor-square experiment was a fun, early test. Together they point the same way: for a cat, enclosed means safe.Case ClosedNo need to fight it. Use it. 01**Give the bed walls.** Choose a covered or high-sided bed, or simply cut a doorway into a sturdy box and add a soft blanket. 02**Keep a box in every new situation.** Moving house, visitors, a trip to the vet: a familiar box gives your cat a ready-made safe spot. 03**Don't pull your cat out.** A cat in a box is a cat that wants a break. Let it come out on its own. One note: if your cat suddenly starts hiding far more than usual and stops eating or using the litter box normally, book a vet visit. That's a health question, not a behavior case.Case closed. Keep the box.Next Case TeaserYou say "walk?" and your dog tilts its head to one side, as if you have just asked it something very complicated. Next case, we find out why. |
