| Case No. 005 · Difficulty: Medium · Species: Dog The CaseThe bath is over. You did it. Nobody got bitten. You turn around to grab the towel.Your dog is gone. From the living room come the sounds of a small storm: running, skidding, a thud, more running. You arrive to find a damp dog sprinting laps around the sofa, rubbing its face into the rug, then rolling on its back with all four legs in the air. Then it does it all again.Your Theory? Here's what you've got.It happens right after the bath, almost never before. The dog seems thrilled, but it also hated the bath five minutes ago.It rubs itself on carpets, sofas, and towels like it's trying to wipe something off.And plenty of dogs do the same laps at other times, like after a walk or late in the evening.Joy? Relief? Revenge on your furniture?Make your call. The RevealYour dog is letting off steam, and trying to get its smell back. Those sudden bursts of running have a name. Behaviorists call them Frenetic Random Activity Periods, or FRAPs. You know them as the zoomies.Zoomies are a normal way for dogs to release built-up energy. And for many dogs, a bath builds up a lot of it: being held still, getting wet, strange sounds, strange smells. When the bath ends, all that tension comes out at once, at full speed. Then there's the smell. Your dog came in smelling like itself. It leaves smelling like your shampoo. To a nose far more powerful than yours, that's a big change, and rubbing on carpets and rolling around is a likely attempt to swap the perfume for something more familiar.Drying off plays a part too. Running, shaking, and rubbing all help get the water out of a thick coat.Honest note: there is very little formal research on zoomies. Stress relief, scent, and drying are the leading explanations, and they likely work together.Case ClosedZoomies are normal and usually harmless. The goal is a safe track, not a stop. 01**Towel well, then open the door.** The drier the dog, the less damp sofa you'll find afterwards. A quick, thorough rub before release also takes some of the edge off. 02**Pick the track.** Let the zoomies happen somewhere with soft floors and nothing breakable, ideally a single room you can close off. Slippery floors are where most skids and bumps happen. 03**Don't chase.** Running after your dog turns the zoomies into a game and keeps them going longer. Stay calm and let it run itself out. One tip for next time: plain water or a mild, low-scent dog shampoo may mean less rolling afterwards. And if your dog is getting frantic or panicky during baths, small, positive practice sessions can make them easier.Case closed. Hide the good cushions.Next Case TeaserYou buy your cat an expensive bed. It ignores the bed and climbs into the box it came in. Next case, we find out why. |
