| Case No. 003 · Difficulty: Easy · Species: Dog The Case Evening. Your dog walks over to its bed. It steps in. Turns once. Turns again. A third lap, slower, nose down, like it's inspecting the work. Then it collapses with a sigh you can hear from the kitchen. The bed is flat. It was flat this morning. It will be flat tomorrow. Your dog checks anyway. Every single time. Your Theory? Consider the evidence. It happens on soft beds, hard floors, and the sofa you said was off limits. Some dogs paw or scratch at the spot first. Most end up curled tight, nose tucked toward tail. And nobody ever taught it to do this. Comfort? Habit? A tiny ritual to summon sleep? Make your call. The Reveal Your dog is making a bed that isn't there. The leading explanation starts with its wild ancestors, who slept outdoors on grass, leaves, and snow. Turning in a tight circle flattens that ground into a nest, pushes aside anything sharp or crawling, and shapes a hollow the body can curl into. The curl matters too. Sleeping in a tight ball protects the belly and holds in body heat on cold nights. The pawing may add a signature. Dogs have glands in their paw pads that leave scent, so scratching at a spot can leave a quiet note that says "this one's taken." And a few turns give one last look around before going off duty. So your dog's bed has never needed flattening. The instruction to flatten it simply arrived long before the bed did. Honest note: no single study has closed this case. These are the leading explanations, and they likely work together. Case Closed Good news: this one is normal. The job is mostly to leave it alone. 01 **Let the ritual run.** Circling is how many dogs settle. Hurrying them along doesn't help them sleep. 02 **Give the nest something to work with.** A bed with raised sides, or a blanket your dog can push around, often lets it settle in fewer laps. 03 **Watch for a change, not the habit.** If your dog suddenly circles far more than usual, struggles to lie down, or keeps getting up and starting again, book a vet visit. Restless settling can be a sign of joint pain or discomfort. That's a health question, not a behavior case. Case closed. Let it take its laps. Next Case Teaser Your cat climbs onto your lap, purrs, and starts kneading you like bread dough. Claws included. Next case, we find out why. |
